BBB Complaint Guide: How to File Effectively

What is the BBB?

The Better Business Bureau is a nonprofit organization that helps resolve disputes between consumers and businesses. While not a government agency, BBB complaints can be very effective as businesses care about their BBB rating.

When to File a BBB Complaint

  • Unresponsive business: Company ignores your complaints
  • Refund disputes: Business refuses legitimate refund request
  • False advertising: Product/service not as described
  • Poor service: Contractor didn't complete work properly
  • Warranty issues: Business won't honor warranty
  • Billing problems: Unauthorized or incorrect charges

Tips for Effective BBB Complaints

  1. Be specific: Include dates, amounts, names of people you spoke with
  2. Stay factual: Avoid emotional language; stick to facts
  3. Include documentation: Receipts, contracts, emails, photos
  4. State desired resolution: Refund, repair, replacement, apology
  5. Be reasonable: Request fair compensation, not excessive demands
  6. Follow up: Respond promptly if BBB or business contacts you
